“Orphan Train”

Song by

Mark Elliott

Search the internet for “orphan train” and you’ll learn that in the early 1900s, immigrant children in New York City were transported by train supposedly to" good homes”, but some ended up as indentured servants, others even shipped back after the autumn crops were harvested.

Nashville singer/songwriter Mark Elliott has always been inspired by history and was inspired by the story of the orphan train to write and record a song by the same name that is featured on his latest CD,
Pickin’ Blackberries.

If you miss the “Americana" music of John Denver, you’ll love the music of Mark Elliott. From the simple pleasures of picking blackberries to a sweet ditty entitled" Not All Who Wander Are Lost”, Mark writes about life in all of its flavors. -

Orphan Train

They call me little angel I’m a Brooklyn baby girl
It’s nineteen twenty-five and I’m brand new to the world
I haven’t a mother or father to love
But the nuns of St. Catherine’s
They gentle picked me up

When I get a little older they say I will depart
From Grand Central Station, with my faith in the farms
I’m polish; I’m Irish – Italian mystery
But when I step down on that platform, American I’ll be

I’m gonna ride that orphan train
From New York City across the plains
Find a loving family and a brand new name
At the end of the line on the orphan train

Now most of us will find a good and gracious home
Grow old and prosper with children of our own
While others will struggle with hard work and pain
And with the harvest over, we’re shipped back east again

I’m gonna ride that orphan train
From New York City across the plains
Find a loving family and a brand new name
At the end of the line on the orphan train

Conductor, conductor may I have a ticket please
No I don’t know where I’m going
But I know who I want to see
She’s smart and she’s pretty
He’s a tall and handsome man
And in my dreams they want me, my real mom and dad

I’m gonna ride that orphan train
From New York City across the plains
Find a loving family and a brand new name
At the end of the line on the orphan train

Repeat Chorus

I am personally very proud  to announce this special edition of "Tall Tales From Cub Creek". I am partnering with my Amelia Island friends, Donna & Mark Kaufman and the Care for Polish Orphans for a very important project to raise money for children.

Ours is a world of desperate needs, deserving people and worthy causes.   My decision to be a partner in this specific project so far from home was simple.  I was inspired by caring people witnessing first hand, a suffering, brainstorming a solution, taking action and making an immediate impact.

Good intentions and noble gestures pale in the light of an idea acted upon and a promise kept.  Generous contributions handled with efficient administration and delivery has equaled thus far; new rehabilitation equipment, remodeled rooms, food, clothing, medical care and more.

Thank you for your support,

Mark Elliott

The View From The Top of the Hill
Words & pictures
from the Cub Creek spread
!

"That’s the view from the top of this hill
Takes my breath, makes my heart stand still
Lying on a blanket and starring off into space
I like to think of everything I’ve lost
What I’ve gained and at what cost
       Where I can see over
my troubles and my spills
From the top of this hill"
